| I had such a wonderful meal the other day at a restaurant that I decided (with some egging on by my guy) to give a shot at reproducing it. The dish was a chicken and vegetable pasta with chipotle cream sauce. We didn't have all the materials called for in the various recipes for cream sauce that I tried on line, but with a few substitutions such as a cubanelle pepper and some sangria instead of chipotle and white wine, we got a result which was more than acceptable and well worth trying again, especially if I can lay hands on the correct kind of pepper. | |

| I'm putting together a salad for a picnic outing/networking party for some friends in Brooklyn and I could use a little nudging in the right direction. I have this vague idea of what I'd like to do, and thought perhaps you guys could help me out. Pictures to come of all the food people bring, in a few days!
I have sweet potatoes, I have coconut milk and I have black beans. I'd like to make some sort of salad out of these things (plus other ingredients per your suggestions). This can be a chilled or room temperature salad, preferably. I'm finding nothing by the way of foodgawker, tastespotting or google.
Any ideas?

| Fandom: POPSLASH Pairing: Kevin/Nick Length: long Author on LJ: enoughofloveAuthor Website: iheartsamWhy this must be read: I cannot believe no one has recced this story yet! In the author's words, a self-indulgent, melodramatic saga. It's a Kevin/Nick epic, from the initial turmoil of forbidden love to their first kiss, all the highs and lows of their relationship, the painful ending and rebirth. Melodramatic, and wonderfully saccharine, and so, so good! One of my favorite popslash stories that I have ever read, by far. Really, just, go read. Drop in the Ocean | |

| Hi there folks!
I'm writing a fic that takes place in 1847, about pioneers moving west on the Oregon Trail. I've had tons of luck with google so far while fleshing out the story, but I've finally hit a block.
I basically just want to know how long it takes to build a plain, single-room log cabin. My characters arrive in Oregon in late October and I was planning on having the cabin be finished in time for Christmas. There are three adults who can work on it full time, and one who starts helping sometime in late November. Is two months a reasonable time frame, or would it take much longer? Also, if they can't build a log cabin in that period of time, where would they live until it was finished? (I'm assuming in the wagon.)
Terms searched on google: log cabins in oregon, log cabin building, log cabin, oregon trail life, westward expansion, pioneer life, pioneer homes, a few other combinations that I've forgotten... I've made heavy use of the 'Log Cabin' and 'Oregon Trail' articles on Wikipedia but they don't seem to include this information.
Thank you in advance for your assistance!

| My character is chained in a dungeon (stone walls and floor) in the Tudor period. he has shackles on his wrists, ankles and a collar and is chained to the wall at all five points. Currently I have the attachments embedded in the wall as cast iron and the shackles and chains wrought iron.
However a friend comes to rescue him. Said friend works with the blacksmith and is a massively strong man and has access to tools. A few hammer blows releases the prisoner from the wall, but he is still in chains. A hammer and chisel against the stone could break the chains from the shackles.
My problem is then to get him out of the shackles and in particular the collar. My questions are:
How likely is it that a hammer and chisel could be used to break the shackles and collar? Would my prisoner be likely to suffer damage from this act? (obviously I don't want him to die or be permanently disabled, but if he is hurt that is not a problem How trusting must he be of his friend, particularly with the removal of the collar? Is there another way and how long would it take?
There is no fear of being disturbed - no guards on the doors as the prisoner is not known to be there - and another friend is keeping the lord occupied, but they must work quickly.
I have googled for images and descriptions of shackles of the time, with very little luck
Thanks in advance. | |

| Setting: Paris modern day The situation: One of my main characters lets call him A works in a museum in Paris, he meets two of the other characters, B and C when he find them poking around in a private storage area. B and C are actually American and A is (pretendiing to be) British (but having lived and worked in Paris for years is fluent with a flawless accent) so most of the conversation will (fortunately for my peace of mind) eventually be in English What I need is a French translation of the start of the conversation, I want A to say something like "Can I help you? You do realise the tourist area is back that way?" Not too impolite as they are customers but just a little acerbic as they are blatantly trespassing. B will then say something in a broken mix of French and English (which I can manage fine because I want it hisFrench to be about my level) and then C (who is practically fluent) says "Yes, sorry. We have an appointment with the director." After which I can thankfully switch them back to English.
Babel fish tells me the translations would be: "Est-ce que je peux vous aider ? Vous réalisez que le secteur de touristes est de retour de cette façon" and "Oui, désolé. Nous avons un rendez-vous avec le directeur" but of course it is notorious for it's strange grammar and I'm not sure whether these would be phrases you would use in this situation. *sighs* I did do French in school but it was so long ago and I was always so bad at it.

| I'm trying to find out what would have been worn by sailors back when the term was literal. The setting has a mix of anthropomorphs and humans, and some fantasy elements - magic is known, and access to it is regular enough to simplify some otherwise labour-intensive tasks, though not everyone has the ability to use it. The world has relatively few large landmasses - much of the known and hospitable world is in the form of archipelagoes, and ships are extremely important for any sort of long-distance trade.
Ships have been around long enough for technology to be at something of a turning point. Many shipboard cannon are still muzzle-loaders, but breech-loading weapons with cartridges, both artillery and small arms(such as revolvers), are starting to gain ground.
I've tried searching for "clothing in the age of sail", but that lead to a bunch of false hits - books, a computer game - and even where I did find things discussing the clothing of the time, it was either incidental mention, or not specific enough to be useful, and sometimes referred to what was worn by people in cities of the time, rather than the sailors themselves.
I also looked on Wikipedia for both "textiles" and "maritime history". On the former I couldn't find any comparison for how well different fabrics work with water, and on the latter, no mention of what people were wearing. I also specifically looked at linen and cotton, but cotton doesn't seem very suitable(too vulnerable to mildew, for instance, and I couldn't tell one way or another how it performed when wet), and linen does seem to absorb water quickly, but I couldn't be sure how it compared to, say, wool.
So: What might sailors have worn? I'm presuming their clothes are loose enough not to restrict mobility, but not so baggy as to catch on things. It's more the fabric itself that I'm trying to identify - something that doesn't absorb so much water as to make sailors sink like a stone overboard, or make them miserable in wet weather(I think linen might have an advantage in that it doesn't FEEL wet until it's quite saturated, but am not sure that's actually practical). But it also has to be something that's comfortable. This particular captain treats his people VERY well, and the person he's involved with is nobility, so in each case, money is no object.
Thoughts? Is linen perhaps better than I give it credit for, especially if a touch of magic can streamline the otherwise labour intensive process? Or is there another fabric that would've been used at the time?
Suggestions appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
-S
EDIT: Thanks all for the responses, looks like I've got a fair bit to work with now.

| Era, Location: 1500s Aztec empire post contact with the Spanish (AU and not historical) Googled terms: Aztec + ship-building, maritime history, naval history, ships, transportation, etc.; various online Nahuatl dictionaries and language essays
Questions: 1) In my story, an Aztec ship explores up the coast of N. America; I am pretty sure the Aztec never built ships, but would like that confirmed (suggestions for search terms much appreciated).
2) The Aztec settlement in my story has four main locations which need names. I would like *not* to use real place-names, but I would like them to be gramatically correct (in modern Nahuatl is fine) and not too precious. The names I am considering are: Ayoaatlan ('river place'), Xochiyan ('conch-shell place'), Pistican or Pistemec ('black place', 'black hills' - hopefully implying north), and Achtonco or Achtopan ('first [landing] place'). As I only speak English and Japanese, if any of these are rude in any other language, please let me know *does not want to be rude*

| Title: A House Mad from GriefGaining Access: Accessible to all Author: Rosy Length/Word Count: ~51,500 Alternate Links to Fic: None Pairing: Severus/Remus, Harry/Neville Rating: hard R with a post-DH altered reality, mentions of rape, torture, and murder. Author's Website: More stories are available hereSummary: The House remembers him, has seen him before. Long, long ago. But he has returned, and the Master will be pleased. The House need only get rid of Severus Snape first. And then the Master will forget his foolish plan. Why everyone should read this: As a fan of ghost/haunted house stories myself, I dove into this story eagerly, especially when Rosy mentioned Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House and Stephen King's derivative of it, Rose Red, as inspirations, and the resulting story didn't disappoint. It's written in first person, which is rare to see, but the voices are clear and distinct, and Snape's is particularly fun to read; Rosy captures his snarky voice well, and I snerked aloud during his chapters numerous times. I was particularly engaged by Severus' description of their means of communicating without words, since I favor characterizing Snape as someone who wouldn't be able to voice sentiments such as "I'm sorry" and "I love you" easily, if at all. Remus and Severus are an established couple here, and while there is a lovely sex scene, the story is plot-driven rather than romance-driven, combining mystery, the supernatural, and action/adventure in such an engaging way that I couldn't stop reading even when I wanted to take a break for dinner. There's a mystery at the heart of the haunting, so I can't say much about the plot because I don't want to spoil it, but the story as a whole is a page-turner (figuratively speaking). I enjoyed it immensely as an homage to one of the greatest haunted house stories of all time with a RL/SS twist, and I enjoyed the little throw-away references to things like Ghost Hunters (I totally agree with Severus that Remus probably has a crush on Jason). The story moved at a good pace, and the descriptive passages gave a strong sense of place and visual imagery, making the story seem cinematic. I recommend this to anyone who likes ghost stories, haunted house stories, and/or mysteries. ( Excerpts ) | |

| I am probably the only person in the world who feels a little bit sad after reading today's Toothpaste for Dinner: toothpastefordinner.comYou see, one of my favourite stories about my late mentor, Bruce Trigger, came about when I phoned him up one day, probably in about 2001. The conversation went like this: S: Hi Bruce! B: Oh hi Steve! I just sent you a telegram! S: ... B: I mean an email! S: [uproarious laughter] B: Well, you know, that's how I see them, like little electronic telegrams! I've also heard it said that Bruce was one of the last users of the McGill library card catalogue, long after it had faded into obsolescence, although that may be exaggerated. He's been on my mind a lot lately - as editor of his memorial volume, I've been compiling anecdotes from contributors about his influence. This one made me a bit melancholy but in a very different way. | |

| As we reported earlier this year, GeoCities, which hosts many fannish resource pages and archives, announced that it will be closing down at the end of the year. They've now announced a more specific date: October 26, 2009. In response, the Open Doors Committee of the OTW would like to announce our GeoCities Rescue Project. If you are the owner of a fanfiction archive or resource, meta or other fannish page on GeoCities and you are looking to house your fiction or other content, the OTW can help! Open Doors is teaming up with the Archive of Our Own and Fanlore to preserve as much material as possible. Fanfiction: We're offering AO3 beta accounts to fanfiction authors currently hosted on GeoCities --both single author and multiple author archives are welcome--so that you may preserve your fiction. If you are not the author, owner or site administrator, you can still document and memorialize parts of a fanfiction site on Fanlore, but we need an authorized person for an AO3 account. Contact Open Doors for more information!
Resource sites: If you are the owner of a fannish resource site, we recommend a page in Fanlore with a summary of the information and purpose of the site along with screencaps of the entry page and/or other key pages to convey the feeling of the site. We have volunteers who can help you set up a Fanlore page documenting both the content and feel of a GeoCities page. Even non-owners of a resource site can document and memorialize a site on Fanlore. Contact Open Doors for help or for more information! For either a fic or a resource site, please include the URL of the site you wish to archive/preserve, and an email address. If you are the administrator of a multi-author site, please include email addresses for each hosted author (if possible). Mirrored from an original post on the OTW Blog.

| Thank you to everyone who wished me a happy birthday, and thanks also to those who sent birthday greetings to frodo_lad four days ago. I really can't believe it's been a year already. El's first year went pretty quickly, but this last year has gone even faster, presumably in part because I was twice as busy! Unfortunately, I'm not exactly having my best birthday ever. We had planned a small party on Sunday with a few local friends as a joint birthday do for me and Fro (really for Fro, of course, but as El solemnly asked me a while ago whether he could "come to [my] birthday" I rather had to have one for him to come to!) but on Saturday Skordh was struck down with a vomiting bug, so we had to cancel as even if he'd been feeling better the next day (which he wasn't) we didn't want to risk being infectious around other people :-( As I generally rely on Skordh to take a lot of the weight over the weekend, I found it hard having to do more of the kid-wrangling etc than I really felt up to, so started the week feeling pretty shattered already. Naturally, with Skordh having felt well enough to go to work today (and I bet he isn't cheery about having been ill for the weekend but fine by Monday!), this was the point at which I came down with the bug too. So as I say, not the most fun way to spend a birthday... Quite apart from this latest bleurghness, I've been feeling fairly rotten recently anyway, as a result of: (a) ( heat/ mugginess/ pressure )(b) ( Hayfever of DOOM )(c) ( Teething baby )Given all of which, it is perhaps not surprising that over the last few weeks my ( ME/CFS has got noticeably worse )So, this little moan more or less comprises my state-of-the-Polly report. I do have one good thing to mention though: on Friday night we took advantage of Skordh's parents having come to visit for Fro's birthday to have them babysit the boys while Skordh and I went out to dinner ON OUR OWN!!! It was lovely! We worked out that the last time we had gone out for a 'date' like that was two and a half years ago, and we agreed that we really need to try to do this sort of thing more often! I do still have a half-written Fro update which I will try to finish and post very soon - it has a lot of ground to cover! - Mood:sick

| Look, people -- I don't create the program registration guidelines for my own amusement. You -- yes, you with the "gifted" 10 year old. I don't care how "mature" and "empowered" your kid is -- the workshop is limited to 11-13 year olds. Yes, maybe it is "ageist" and "arbitrary". However, it is the requirement of the staff presenting the workshop. So please shut up and go away. And don't try lying. I think the whole building heard you shouting, so, we're all really, really aware of your child's age. Now, as for you, who "forgot" when registration opened. The class is full. No, I will not make an exception for you. Just like I haven't made an exception for the dozen other people who "forgot" to register their child soon enough. Please do not give me your sob story. I am truly sorry that your grandmother's best friends' second cousin came down with a case of shingles and premature labor simultaneously. However, your kid is still not getting in the class. Now, on to the staff... Registration for all programs opens 2 weeks before the program date. It has been like this since time immemorial. Do not sign kids up before registration starts. Remember all those fliers we had printed up? Remember all those schools we dropped them off at? They all have the dates on them. The dates are also on the online calendar. You have to override the registration software to sign a kid up before the date. So please don't tell me you "don't understand" how kids signed up before the registration opened. You signed them up, I can see your initials! When a class is full, it is full. We have an official waiting list for those who don't get in. However, when that list is full, do not sign more people up. Do not take their name and phone number and say I will get back to them. I know you are a total wimp and can't say no to anybody, but please don't deputize me to do it. Do not tell people to "just show up". Then instead of irate patrons on the phone, I have irate patrons in person. And while we're on the topic, do not change the maximum registration numbers because "you figure I could take a few more". I can't. The instructors I've contracted with can't. Now, instead of soothing irate patrons, I have to soothe irate presenters. As a bonus, now we don't have enough room or materials for all of the kids in the class, so everybody is screwed because you "didn't want to be negative". | |
