28th-Nov-2009 11:00 pm - Wednesday 28 November 1666

Up, and with Sir W. Pen to White Hall (setting his lady and daughter down by the way at a mercer's in the Strand, where they are going to lay out some money), where, though it blows hard and rains hard, yet the Duke of York is gone a-hunting. We therefore lost our labour, and so back again, and by hackney coach to secure places to get things ready against dinner, and then home, and did the like there, and to my great satisfaction: and at noon comes my Lord Hinchingbroke, Sir Thomas Crew, Mr. John Crew, Mr. Carteret, and Brisband. I had six noble dishes for them, dressed by a man-cook, and commended, as indeed they deserved, for exceeding well done. We eat with great pleasure, and I enjoyed myself in it with reflections upon the pleasures which I at best can expect, yet not to exceed this; eating in silver plates, and all things mighty rich and handsome about me. A great deal of fine discourse, sitting almost till dark at dinner, and then broke up with great pleasure, especially to myself; and they away, only Mr. Carteret and I to Gresham College, where they meet now weekly again, and here they had good discourse how this late experiment of the dog, which is in perfect good health, may be improved for good uses to men, and other pretty things, and then broke up. Here was Mr. Henry Howard, that will hereafter be Duke of Norfolke, who is admitted this day into the Society, and being a very proud man, and one that values himself upon his family, writes his name, as he do every where, Henry Howard of Norfolke. Thence home and there comes my Lady Pen, Pegg, and Mrs. Turner, and played at cards and supped with us, and were pretty merry, and Pegg with me in my closet a good while, and did suffer me 'a la baiser mouche et toucher ses cosas' upon her breast, wherein I had great pleasure, and so spent the evening and then broke up, and I to bed, my mind mightily pleased with the day's entertainment.

Setting: Present day, an unspecified but nice restaurant/hotel in Rome

Research done: Google search on Flunitrazepam, corresponding Wikipedia entry (via Google search on "knockout drug," "mickey finn," et cetera), a few entries in this community on this and related topics

My story involves a scene where two characters, a novice spy (who's stumbled into something well beyond his training at this point) and his much more experienced partner, are having dinner at a nice restaurant attached to their hotel. My ideal situation is this: they order a bottle of wine and the novice drinks first, but the wine has been drugged and after a little while he either blacks out completely, or becomes very uninhibited and has no memory of the occasion. His partner has not had any wine by the time that the novice exhibits symptoms, and is able (with help) to get him to their room and wait for him to wake up. Novice regains consciousness after an appropriate amount of time (I can work with just about any time window here, but six to ten hours is what I've been envisioning), with a terrible headache and light-sensitivity. Either way, partner turns the lights off for a while as novice recuperates. My drug of choice for this debacle is Rohypnol/Flunitrazepam, since as far as I can tell, it covers the necessary bases (though if there's a substance that would take effect faster, I am open to that), and assume the person responsible for drugging them knows the correct dosage to get the effect he wants (i.e. incapacitate the two men and capture/interrogate them).

My research so far suggests that Flunitrazepam takes about twenty minutes to start affecting someone when taken orally, and that alcohol can intensify its effects. Would alcohol cause it to work faster, or just make its effects stronger? How soon would a trained observer know that something was wrong? Would the drugged person feel or taste anything right away that he could remark upon, thus alerting his partner, even if it's just an odd taste or texture to the drink?

Would the drugged person pass out very quickly (i.e. twenty minutes pass, and then, bam, he's on the floor), or would he slowly get sleepier/less coordinated over a longer period of time? Same question with the amnesiac effects - at what point would the gap in his memory begin?

One site that I checked said that it may have a bitter taste when mixed with alcohol, but would this be noticeable in something like wine that is already pretty strong? It seems like Flunitrazepam comes in tablets, so would these be crushed and dissolved in the liquid, or is there also a liquid form?

As for side-effects/after-effects, I've read about headaches and digestive upset, so how long would they last after waking up, and how intense are they?

That's an awful lot of questions, so... many, many thanks in advance!
Setting: Modern day New York City, NY.

Research:
searched Google for "working in landfill, firsthand experience of a dump, maps of new york city dumps, new york landfill regulations", posted my query on Yahoo! Answers

What I Need: My story, as I stated above, is to take place in part in a landfill modern day New York. My character is a young woman about 20 years old who is a close friend of the dump's owner, but in order to pay back what she feels she owes to him, she works in the dump 5 days a week.

The most useful source I could get my hands on would be a firsthand account of landfill work, including the hierarchy of a waste management facility and the work expected of a laborer. It would also be very helpful if this information could be relative to New York, or at least a similar American city. What guidelines define the placement of city landfills? How close are they allowed to be to the waterfront? What is day to day life like? Is there more traffic during certain days of the week?
28th-Nov-2009 06:05 pm - Hypothermia + Sex
Setting: Sci-fi, a few hundred years in the future, on an ice planet with year-round winter (think Hoth, or Delta Vega if you're so inclined).
Searched: Any combination of terms to do with hypothermia and sex, but apart from a lot of fiction I'm not really finding the medical stuff I need. This book helped, but I'm not sure if I completely understand what it's saying.

So, I have two (precariously) romantically-linked medical professionals trapped in a storage room (which is empty) (and is structurally composed of ice and snow a la sundry Ice Hotels). Both of them have cold-weather gear on but have no medical supplies, and they'll be there for hours if not a full day or two. I'm pretty happy with my research on the actual effects of hypothermia, I think I've got that down pat, but what I have a bigger problem with is: how feasible is it that they would resort to having sex to keep warm? How long would it take, probably, for them to reach that step? What kind of, you know, practical/technical issues should I be concerned about? Anything you've got to offer on the subject would be so useful.
My character get's shot from behind and the bullet enters on the left side, doesn't hit any bone or organs, but it doesn't exit. the guy lost a lot of blood, as he had to find help before anybody examined him.

how would a healer in the 17th century in the scottish highlands (not a doctor) have proceded

1. to get the bullet out
2. to stop the bleeding
3. to lower the possibility of an infection

Thanks for helping

Costco is now featuring the Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Granada Television Series ) DVDs for $99.99 (which is less than the amazon.com price by $28). If you don't have a Costco near you, it's also free shipping until November 30. THE COMPLETE JEREMY BRETT COLLECTION!! With David Burke and a special interview with Edward Hardwicke and it includes all the movies on the 12 disks.

A little less exciting, IMO, Costco is also featuring Basil Rathbone in The Complete Sherlock Holmes ) DVDs for $84.99, same deal for shipping. (Would have probably shown more enthusiasm if these DVDs didn't also have Nigel Bruce as Watson *gags*)

I've never seen these at Costco before, so obviously they must be riding on the wake of the premiere of Guy Ritchie's new Sherlock Holmes film. Remember the episode of 'The Speckled Band' where Holmes just happened to go in Watson's room to wake him up? Remember the 'Man with the Twisted Lip' where Holmes and Watson nearly shared a bed? I freakin' do and i want this so bad it hurts every passing second i don't have it.

Guest Reviewer: Roslyn

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: none
Length: 9388 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: http://truthtrek.com/lky/wendy.html

Why this must be read: Nothing brings out key elements of a buddy-genre story like a case and action tale combined with a holiday theme. “So This is Christmas” is a prime example of the traits which allowed this show to retain its loyal and long-running following into fan fiction . Saoirse illustrates the natural intensity of a true friendship and imbues it with that fraught quality which exemplifies the interdependence of sentinel and guide. In the following excerpt, the partners argue about the danger involved in Jim acting as bait for a 'Santa' killer trolling the malls:

"I'm going with you." Sandburg jabbed a finger into Ellison's chest. "And don't even say it's too dangerous! No one's going to go after you in a crowded mall. The others were all attacked when they were leaving. Not while they were actually playing Santa. So there's no reason I can't be there while you're..." His eyes narrowed and then he relaxed suddenly, the tension draining from him as if he'd suddenly had his prayers answered. "Look man, I'm sorry. Sometimes I feel like he's taking advantage of you, without thinking about the consequences." He held his hands out in acquiescence. "But it's your job. I get that, man. I shouldn't have sounded off like that. So, we good here?"

"I'm good if you're good," Ellison said, shaking his head at Sandburg's ability to have an argument with him, apologize and make up afterward, all without Ellison managing to get in a single word. He supposed it saved time at least, but somehow it was every bit as exhausting as if they'd both been shouting.

Musical Artist: Katie Melua/Ewan McGregor
Vidder on LJ: [info]sue_chose_this
Vidder's Website: on her live journal
Pairing: Qui-Gon JInn/Obi-Wan Kenobi

Why this vid kicks ass:
Sue_chose_this makes awesome vids and this one is no exception. The images she uses go beautifully with the words of the music and together they show Obi-Wan remembering Qui-Gon and what Qui-Gon's guidance still means to him throughout his life after Qui-Gon's death. And the vid goes even beyond that....

You can see the vid on her lj page, but I recommand you use the generous opportunity she offers to download it to your computer and set it to big screen.

In a Sun Media article by published throughout Cananda, Sharon Weatherall wrote about an Ontario girl who is going to travel to Australia to meet an ailing fellow writer, thanks to the Australian Wish Foundation. Laura and Emmy became met three years ago on Fan Fiction, where participants write stories on line, then started chatting on MSN.

In the Minneapolis City Pages, Jessica Armbruster wrote a piece promoting Mulligan Stu's Do-Over Revue, "Where artsy folks will share some of the lamest train wrecks from their past." Many creative types are willing to admit that on the way to making the works that they are most proud of, there's a wake of bad art, atrocious writing, and pieces in general bad taste. This is especially true when exploring stuff from the teen and college years, be it angst-ridden poetry about vegetarianism, fan fiction from seventh grade involving characters from Scooby Doo, or a collage with hundreds of pictures of Luke Perry glue-sticked to poster board.

Finally, in the Mountain Home, Arkansas Baxter Bulletin, Deb Peterson reported the eight-year-old poet Averee Hutson has started filling a journal with fan fiction from the iCarly series.

Why this must be read: This summer, there was a Big Bang fest for the Captain America/Iron Man pairing (see [info]capiron_bigbang). Eleven stories were posted, with artwork. I would happily rec more than half of them on Crack Van. However, Crack Van drivers must observe the speed limit. Therefore, I have picked one Big Bang story to rec, and I picked the story that made me cry. (It does have a happy ending, in case you're worried about that.)

Sea Stars is long and plotty, with wonderful pacing, satisfying character interaction, and a never-before-seen tactic for achieving global domination. Also: amnesia, resurrection, lots of fish, the horror of finding one's expensive imported coffee grinder is not working, and the origin of the Undead Avengers.

28th-Nov-2009 03:32 pm - Chili Dear
Hello, Ive been watching the community for a while now and decided I would share my Deer Chili... :)
I hope you all enjoy the recipe. :)

2lbs of ground deer meat
2 cans of chili beans
2 cans of kidney beans
2 cans of diced tomatoes
1 can of small tomato sauce
1 can of tomato paste
1 pk of chili powder
1 onion
clove of garlic
and various spices

brown up the ground deer meat with an onion, glove of garlic, half the pack of chili powder, pinch of ground black pepper, salt, oregano in a skillet. While you have that going heat up the beans, tomatoes and other half of the chili powder in the crock set to low and cook it all day. When the meat is ready blend it into the crock and let your chili cook all day. It smells wonderful and you wont be able to tell its deer meat.
I love the deer meat because its very lean and no grease at all. :)

Fandom: HEROES
Pairing: Arthur Linderman/Luke Campbell, Luke Campbell/Sylar
Length: 9078
Author on LJ: [info]hangthemj
Author Website: over at lukexsylar

Why this must be read:
This is pretty much epic. It's a story told from Luke's POV that takes place in a post-apocalypse AU where the norms of society has fallen apart - it's all about surviving and the powerful vs the powerless, and although Luke ends up as a sex slave he does not do all that bad for himself. The way his POV is written is convincing and his pragmatism and his attraction to power shines through. And the smut, my God, the smut... it's amazing! This is some terrifyingly good bdsm with Luke as a wonderfully greedy bottom. [info]hangthemj really nails the utter worship that most Luke/Sylar shippers live for.

And the opening scene alone... It's angsty and tragic and striking.
